| Brown Kitchen Makeover |
| We took a look at the makeover of a 1970s-style brown kitchen. |

1 A wall of speckled bricks was the dominant feature of this dark, old-fashioned kitchen. A brown colour scheme and beige-tiled splashback completed the dreary decor.
2 The room was structurally sound but in urgent need of a facelift. The owners' budget was about $2000.
3 The brick feature wall was covered with plasterboard. Next, the benchtops and doors were replaced. The owners decided on Formica's Rolled Edge benchtop in Dusty Jade Graphics. They chose Planked Pear for the cupboards (Formica Rolled Edge doors and benchtops have a 90-degree turn at the edges, providing safety and durability).
4 As the wall was damaged when the tiles were removed, fibre cement sheeting was glued to the wall. This provided a good water-resistant backing for the new tiles.
5 Three rows of tiles were laid. The owners decided on two rows in Egyptian Blue. For the centre row they chose tiles depicting a beach scene.
6 Finally, the kickboards were re-laminated in matching blue.
