| Jacaranda House |
| The owners of this house were determined to extend their home without sacrificing their much-loved jacaranda trees. |

The architect, Dennis Dawson, was asked to create a "parents' retreat", separate from the existing house yet blending in with the original structure. He had two restrictions. First, the owners of the house wanted to keep their jacaranda trees. Second, he had to work within a tight budget.

Dennis designed a two-storey addition at the front, clad with fibre-cement sheeting. The addition sits between the two existing Jacaranda trees and the tulip tree.

Upstairs are located the main bedroom, ensuite and walk-in wardrobe. Downstairs is the main living area. Dennis also incorporated a common deck that links the house to the new extension.

The existing house was refurbished. The carpet was removed and the floorboards were sealed. A new kitchen, bathroom and toilet were installed.

The budget was maintained by avoiding expensive site excavation, and by supporting the entire structure on steel posts. Costs were also minimised by using a lightweight timber frame and fibre-cement cladding on the exterior walls. Repairs to the original home were kept to a minimum to help keep the costs down.
