Empty-nest renovations
When their grown children flew the coop, the owners of this house decided to make some changes.

The Empty-Nest syndrome is familiar to many parents. As children grow up and move out, the family home becomes too big and mostly unused. The solution for the owners of this Sydney home is to remove a top floor bedroom and renovate the area into a large living and dining room.

The owners recently purchased this two-storey, three-bedroom house after selling their large family home. Without the children, they only need a master bedroom and spare bedroom for visitors. Since their daughter left home, the third bedroom has been used for storage. Realising this was a waste of space, they decided to convert the bedroom, living and dining room into one large open plan area, with a few clever design ideas.

The owners were renovating on a budget wanted to have a more space without having to extend. The extra bedroom was the first to go. The walls were knocked down, eliminating not just the bedroom, but also the hallway running along side.

Many bricks were removed to make way for the incoming walls. The bedroom was removed and the bathroom relocated downstairs. The new area is centred around a two-way fireplace, made of Hebel concrete

The front door was relocated to fit in with the new layout. The courtyard was also renovated so the new French doors and windows look out on a beautifully landscaped garden.

Council regulations prohibited and renovations to the front porch. Although the owners don't like the porch they had to make sure the windows were sympathetic to the line of the adjoining house.
