Walls
1 Begin by painting the room with a coat of 'Vanilla Frost' on the walls, using a roller. 2 To create the feature squares, use the pencil and tape measure to mark 20cm x 20cm squares, approximately one metre apart, along the top of the walls. Outline the squares with masking tape, paint the inside with white acrylic paint, and when dry, remove the tape. 3 Measure and mark a 10cm x 10cm square in the centre of each white square. Paint with gold leaf size, wait it to go tacky and then attach the gold leaf. To pick up the gold leaf, use grease-proof paper cut slightly larger than the gold leaf, lay it over the gold leaf, press firmly and then place it into position. Remove excess gold leaf by dusting with a clean, dry soft brush.
Furniture 1 Remove old paint and varnish from the bed, bedside cabinets and wardrobe. An electric sander will make the job easier. (Remove the bedside cabinet drawers first, as these will be used for shoe storage later on.) Wipe off any dust with a damp cloth. 2 Paint the bed frame, bedside cabinets (apart from the tops) and the wardrobe in white acrylic and allow to dry. Carefully sand the white paint in sections to give a worn look. 3 Bedside cabinets. Remove the existing drawer supports with a hammer and chisel. 4 Attach a new MDF shelf into the middle of each cabinet, either by screwing the shelf in place from the outside of the cabinet, or by gluing shelf runners into place, and then screwing the shelf directly to the runners from the inside. (Attach the shelf so a wicker basket can be placed on each shelf of the cabinet.) 5 Polish the top of the cabinets with furniture wax for a rich and natural finish and put baskets into place 6 Wardrobe. Using a jigsaw, cut out the wooden panels within the wardrobe doors. If the doors are hollow finish the edges with timber trim. 7 Replace the wooden panels with voile. To do this, hem the top and bottom of the fabric so it fits within the length of the panel opening. Be generous with the width to allow for soft gathers. Attach curtain wire, hooks and eyelets to the inside of the top and bottom of each door, and thread the fabric onto the curtain wire.
Shoe storage 1 Place the three drawers upside down and next to each other to make one long drawer. Screw the drawers together. 2 Cut a piece of MDF to form the base of the long drawer and screw into place. 3 Attach castors into the corners of the long drawer. 4 Paint the inside of the drawer with an all-purpose sealer, line with music sheets and smooth over to prevent bubbles from forming underneath the paper. Trim off any excess paper with scissors. Cover the front of the drawers in the same way. 5 Apply another coat of all-purpose sealer over the inside and front of the drawers and allow to dry. Paint the remaining sections of the drawers in white acrylic.
Plaster wall decorations 1 Mix plaster of Paris in a plastic container. 2 Pour into moulds and allow to set. 3 When dry remove the plaster from the moulds. 4 Cut MDF frames or mounting boards for the plaster shapes. Arrange the plaster shapes onto the frames and glue into place. 5 Apply a coat of white paint over the plaster shapes and frames. 6 Attach a picture hook onto the back of each MDF frame and hang from the wall using fishing line and a picture-rail hook. If you don't have a picture rail fix a hook or nail into the wall.
Curtains 1 Hem the top and bottom of the voile so it hangs perfectly within the window and is wide enough to allow a generous gather of the fabric. 2 Thread the curtain onto the curtain rod through the top hem.
