This kitchen is looking drab. The laminate is lifting, the splashback tiles are dark and gloomy, the sink takes up too much of the bench space, and the eating area is practically useless, with most of the space consumed by a hutch that also blocks the view from the kitchen. The owners are happy with the layout and storage space, so Peter Harris steps in to give the place a face lift.

The splashback tiles are removed with hammer and chisel. Doing this yourself will significantly reduce the cost of retiling. When demolishing wall tiles, always wear protective gear, and start from the top and work down.
The hutch was dismantled and the laminate removed. Peter discovered that removing the hutch meant leg room was reduced considerably. To correct this problem, the cupboard was cut back 150mm.
Pieces of scrap ply were used to fill the gaps left from installing a smaller sink. With that done, preparations were made to create a clean, flat surface for the new laminate. Adhesive was applied and 7mm ply sheeting screwed down over the bench tops.
An even coat of laminate adhesive was applied with a comb spreader and lengths of dowel placed across the surface. The dowels allow you to position the laminate and will simplify the process of eliminating air bubbles, as you are able to pull out one dowel piece at a time, smoothing the laminate before you go onto the next one.
With the laminate in place and dry, the hole for the sink is cut out with a trimmer. Laminate is less likely to crack if it is cut after it has been glued down.
Pete tiled the splashback with Asia Gloss White tiles from Amber, making the facelift complete.
