Jungle Nursery Makeover
A jungle theme gives this kids' bedroom new life, and its occupants a little world they can call their own.

Home for three children under the age of five, this bedroom was in desperate need of a makeover. Toys and furniture cluttered the floor and the wallpaper was dated and shabby. The owners decided to inject some life with a jungle theme that would appeal to all three children.

In preparation for the makeover, the wallpaper was stripped back and the walls and ceiling were painted. The sky mural on the ceiling, painted with a Dulux Skier's Trail, was the parents idea. They wanted to enhance the jungle scene, and felt that it would be fun for the kids to feel in their own little world when they were in their room.

The chosen wallpaper border really brings the jungle theme into the room, and set the tone for the colours used in our makeover. The wallpaper comes in large sheets, like contact paper. It is peel-and-stick which makes application tricky as you only have a short time to work with it before it is fixed. The key is to work in pieces about a metre wide, and smooth as you go with either a wallpaper brush, or a screed, to remove any air bubbles. The team from Courtney and Wise Painters and Decorators applied ours. They recommend using a professional for the job to save any hassle. A frieze in the same pattern as the border was added just below the ceiling.

Suzie painted the pine chest of drawers green at the bottom, graduating to a sky blue at the top, to work in with the theme of the jungle meeting the sky. Another great idea was to turn the dull change table into a tent which will not only be a great hiding place for the children, but also a place for messy toy boxes, stuffed toys, and of course nappies. The parents have chosen a green and cream stripe fabric, to match the curtains in the room.

Step by step

1 Cut a piece of fabric to cover the top of your change table, leaving a seam allowance. Then cut out three drops, to cover the two lengths and one end of the table, making sure the tent will reach to the floor.
2 On the fourth side, sew two pieces of fabric overlapping in the middle. This will create an entrance for the tired explorers and give access to nappies and toys stored underneath. Sew all pieces together.
3 If you like, you can also cut a square hole on one side of the tent to create a window, and then sew on a piece of fabric as a flap, which can be rolled up and tied with rope.
4 Slip the tent over the table and hang a clear plastic sheet over the top. It doesn't have to be attached, it can hang like a tablecloth. This makes it easy to clean.
5 We cut out some flowers and vines from silk material, and glued them on with a hot-gun.

The focal-point of the room is the fireplace, which Suzie enhanced with some bamboo secured in place with hooks drilled into the wall and metal ties. The bamboo was then decorated with twisted crepe paper, for a vine effect, and stuffed monkeys and parrots. To complete the theme animal print linen covers all the beds.
