Living on the water can be delightful but when it comes to renovating, things can get difficult. The young couple in this makeover have decided on a new kitchen. There's just one problem - the new components have to be shipped in by barge and then negotiated up the 72 steps to the house.
As well as all the usual cupboards, storage spaces and appliances, this kitchen features a boat-shaped island, housing the stove, oven and providing much needed storage.
When the house was bought the kitchen was situated at the back of the house. This was transformed into a bedroom with the new kitchen to be built at the front of the home, taking advantage of the spectacular waterfront views.
A specialist cabinet maker was hired, and a design for the new kitchen island was decided upon, in keeping with the home's nautical nature. Together, both parties came up with the boat or bow-shaped design of the kitchen island, blending in beautifully with their immediate environment.
The bulk of the kitchen uses Laminex products. A mirror-like metallic look for the splashback has been chosen to reflect the view of the water. They've also chosen a natural timber look to tie in with the timber in the house and a light coloured laminate to help reflect light into the room. The cabinets all have a built-in curved shape to them, to complement the curves of the island benchtop.
The kitchen island features a New Zealand made down draft range hood which sucks the cooking fumes into the sub-floor area where they are then expelled. Made from stainless steel and exceptionally quiet in operation, this is a great solution to those often bulky and noisy conventional range hoods. A practical and hardwearing kitchen with a difference and well worth the transportation difficulties and extra costs involved.

Barge cost around $50 per hour. Total barge costs around $250, in addition to the standard delivery rate.
