Our House shows how to transform a run-down backyard shed for under $500. The existing concrete floor in this example is cracked and worn. To lay another concrete floor is expensive - and there is no guarantee it won’t chip and wear again. So the owners have decided to opt for a cheaper alternative. The actual quantity of materials will vary depending on the size of your shed.

1
First, clear out all the junk and unwanted rubbish that has accumulated. Sweep the floor clean of all the loose concrete and dirt.

2
Using treated pine, 3 bearers and 6 joists are laid over the existing cracked concrete floor. They are levelled and nailed into place, after first chocking them up where necessary.

3
The walls of the shed are just basic framework, so the cladding is exposed. To cover this, timber veneer panelling is used because it is quick to put up, looks great, last for years and is low cost. A random groove panelling in a pine veneer was chosen.

4
Remove all the bent and broken nails from the frames and work out how many panels you need for the whole shed. Cut the panels to size with a jigsaw, making sure you leave room for the windows and nail to the frame-work beams.

5
Now it’s time to prepare the MRMDF floor. Cut the MRMDF to workable pieces with an electric saw and nail it to pine bearers. Leftover MDF was used to make a workbench which was attached to one wall.

Materials
Treated pine bearers for the floor, amount to suit size of shed
MRMDF for the floor (18mm thick MDF which is moisture resistant – 6 sheets used here)
Random pine groove panelling veneer for the walls

Tools

Hammer
Nails
Electric saw (to cut the MDF)
Jigsaw (to cut the veneer panelling)
Sander
Plane
Pencil
Tape measure

Cost
Pine veneer panelling about $15 for a 2.4m x 1.2m sheet. Total cost under $500.
