To obtain more privacy from their neighbours, these owners decided to install a pergola. They have chosen a Solatec pergola because it features solar battens that are permanently angled towards north. These provide the area with maximum sun during winter and minimum sun during summer. This pergola is installed by qualified tradesmen and the method that follows is for information only.
The first stage of building the new pergola is to remove the existing guttering along the side of the house. Holes are then cut through the facia boards. Some of the roof tiles are lifted so that support brackets can be bolted to the roof trusses.
Next, work starts on the frame. The beam closest to the house is bolted on and then the same is carried out on the opposite side. At one end a support post can be attached to the pavers. The other side requires a hole to be dug to take concrete footings.
The owners have opted for a gabled roof, to fit in with the existing roof line. The next stage of construction is the making of the five trusses. There is one at each end and three spaced evenly along the length of the frame.
The finished frame is then painted and the battens nailed to this frame. During summer, when the sun is high, the battens block the rays. In winter, when the sun is lower, the angled battens let the sun shine through to provide light and warmth.
The new box gutter can now be fitted. It's cut to size, then fixed between the roof and the pergola. The protective plastic cover is not removed until the last minute, to avoid damage. If you are having a pergola installed, it is best to add a larger-capacity gutter and down pipe. This is to cope with the increased water run-off from the now much larger roof area.
The roof is clear, corrugated polycarbonate sheeting that gets screwed onto the battens. The ridge capping is added to finish the job. So now the owners have a large outdoor area that should be cool in summer and warm in winter. A new lattice screen, brick barbecue and outdoor setting completes the addition.
