On board the frigate H.M.A.S. Melbourne an urgent problem needs sorting out. Thirty female sailors live in the proximity of their mess area which desperately needs a transformation into something more comfortable.

A full makeover is necessary for this small room which is used by up to twenty women at a time! This installation is carried out by professional tradesmen, with some help from the sailors themselves.

The old storage cabinet, which provides insufficient hanging space for the uniforms, is removed, along with the old wall units. Next, the fridge is removed and is given a complete re-spray job.

A fresh coat of paint is applied to the walls of the mess, and then the new storage cabinets installed. They are covered in a heat and moisture resistant veneer for longer life.

The female mess is well below deck, so to give a feeling of more space and to "open the room up" a scenic mural is painted on a section of wall.

A new corner unit and carpet is installed. A thick rubber underlay called Regupol is laid before the carpet goes down, for greater sound insulation.

The old cushions are re-covered in a navy chenille in a Navy colour and replaced on the newly built seat.

With this makeover complete, the women will now have a much-improved living area that makes greater use of what little space there is available.
