Gone are the days of plain and boring white appliances. Dishwashers and other kitchen appliances have already started to be matched or veneered to tie in with the décor. Now the fridge has its turn!

Hi-Lo Special Spray Finishes is one company that uses a polyurethane full gloss paint that can disguise or highlight your fridge (or other white appliances), depending on your needs. Using similar processes to car painting, Hi-Lo will achieve the same gloss finish as the original on your fridge. You choose the colour.

Due to this process and the baking oven used, they guarantee the fridge colour will last as long as your standard white finish.

There are a number of ways to utilise this service. You could make a feature fridge by painting it a contrasting colour to the rest of the kitchen or you can custom design your own look and blend it into the scheme.

In this example, the home owners want the fridge to match the existing cabinet colours which are a blue/green in colour. The colour they have chosen is called Stromble-a metallic green/blue.

Painting Process:

1
First, the fridge is picked up and taken to the factory for spraying. On arrival, fixtures are removed and the fridge sanded back. Areas not to be sprayed are protected with masking tape and paper sheeting. The fridge doors are removed.

2
A primer is sprayed on in preparation for the main colour coats. They then wipe it down with a wet rag to ensure a smooth surface. It's then left to dry for about 20 minutes.

3
Next, 2-3 coats of colour coat is sprayed with about 20 minutes drying time between each coat, followed by three coats of clear sealer. A similar drying time is used between each coat.

4
Finally, the fridge is baked for four hours in an oven to further dry and seal the colour and finish.

5
Before delivering it back to the owners, the fridge is left to cure for a day and the fixtures and doors are re-attached.

In this example the owners had the pantry door painted as well, to complete the look for the kitchen.

Cost
Fridge: $350.00 Pantry doors (x 3): $300.00 Total: $650.00 Costs approximately $85 per square metre (depending on the surface).
