$300 Laundry Makeover
We transform this ugly duckling of a laundry into a room that won't embarrass the owners.

Using a budget of $300 and a little elbow grease, this tired old laundry gets a makeover.

1
First, all junk is thrown out and the walls cleaned with a solution of sugar and soap. Any mould is killed with Mould Action Pre-Paint Treatment, which is simply wiped on, left for 24 hours and washed off.

2
Since the laundry opens onto the kitchen, it will be painted the same colour to visually extend the room. The concrete trough is to be retained as it has lots of character, and a fresh coat of paint is all it needs. Grip Lock primer is used to ensure the new paint sticks to the old gloss enamel on the trough.

3
Shelves are painted next, together with the architraves.

4
To repair damage caused by the family dog, the lino is removed and the concrete floor painted. First, completely clean the floor with a mixture of one part acid, three parts water. A products called Peel Away is used to remove any glue that didn't disappear with the acid clean-up, and then the floor is left to dry.

Safety tip: use protective gloves when handling acid treatment. These can be bought specially for this purpose - ordinary rubber gloves should not be used.

5
The floor is finished off with a hard-wearing paving paint that is also hopefully dog-proof! A paint additive called VC175 Tropical Strength Mould Killer is used to prevent mould appearing on painted surfaces for the life of the paint. Just add 20ml per four litres of paint.

Deck Grip, a non-slip additive, is also mixed into the paint before use. To complete the look, a towel rack and assorted hooks are added in order to hide the water pipes. This project came in just under budget!
