1
Everything in this kitchen was in working order but the look and feel needed to be updated, without spending a fortune. The kitchen benchtops were replaced with a pre-cut Formica top in Evening Dusk Quarry (a charcoal colour).

2
A hole was then cut in the top for the new one-and-three-quarter-size sink, and a new mixer tap added. The installation was carried out by a qualified tradesman.

3
The old and buckled lino was replaced with a similar floor covering in a black and white checkerboard pattern. For ease of laying, a paper pattern is first cut to size and then used as a template.

4
Two aluminium strips are used at either end to hold the new lino in place. No glue is needed.

5
Clever and colourful accessories complete the look. These include stainless steel knobs, a three-tiered hanging basket and new kitchenware. A chicken wire hanging frame has been made to show these off. It's also extremely practical: with the addition of stainless steel butcher's hooks, pots and pans can be hung from the frame.

6
To make the hanging frame, first cut the 30mm x 20mm pine into two pieces @ 900mm and two pieces @ 400mm (see Materials below). Pre-drill the 900mm ends. (See Diagram 1.)Glue and screw the frame together. (See Diagram 2.)Stretch the chicken wire across the frame and staple to the face. (See Diagram 3.)

7
Once you have stapled around the perimeter, trim the overhanging wire with a craft (Stanley) knife. Cut the 30mm x 8mm pine to give a mitred join and fix to the wired side of the frame. Paint or stain as required. For a nice rustic appeal, simply leave raw. (See Diagram 4.) Stainless steel butcher's hooks are used to hang various kitchen implements, providing a great space-saving storage system.
