1
The plain yellow walls needed a lift. We achieved this by stencilling a border around the top of the walls - a great way to dress up an area without the trouble of a complete paint job.

2
First, using the backing cardboard from your stencil, mark out the area to be stencilled. Then, using masking tape, mask off the area. To make the stencil stand out, sponge the area with white paint. Once this is dry, you can begin to stencil. We used a floral design, painting the shaped edges blue, the roses yellow and the leaves green.

3
Bed linen can also be stencilled by mixing craft paint with fabric medium. We used plain white pillowcases which were stencilled on the closed ends of each case. To co-ordinate the walls and furnishings, we used the same stencil design. The same stencil was also used to print a border around the sides and bottom edge of the quilt cover. The paint needs to be air-dried for at least 24 hours before it is heat-set with an iron.

4
Next, we made voile curtains trimmed with fake pearls for the window. The curtains were hung from the cornice right down to the floor; the effect of this being to make the window appear larger. Voile curtains were also made for each side of the bed, providing a romantic touch. Fake pearls are a great way to dress up plain fabric and can be purchased by the tub from craft shops.

5
We also decorated some damask mats with a pearl trim. These were to go on the bedside table, chest of drawers and dressing table. Finally, a plain mirror was given a facelift. The mirror was decorated by gluing pieces of lace onto two diagonally opposite corners. A piece of thin satin ribbon was then used to connect the lace corners. The mirror was then placed onto a sheet of glass that had been cut to size. It was then placed into a frame to create a frame within a frame.

6
To complete the room, we added a couple of vases filled with fresh flowers and some bedside lampshades. In the end, the whole makeover came in under budget at $384.
