Architect Dennis Rabinowitz decided to transform an old warehouse and adjoining parking lot into a terrace-style home. True to its warehouse origins, the house features exposed metal beams and stainless steel wires throughout the interior and on the balcony.

Although the house is built on a narrow block, a sense of space and light has been achieved by maximising light sources and minimising structural walls and solid staircases. Through an open-plan design, Dennis has created a spacious family home. On the ground-floor level the space is cleverly utilised; the glass doors, for example, fold away so that the house becomes an indoor/outdoor living area during the summer months.

Above, a suspended walkway/bridge leads to a study on the second floor. Dennis felt that, as they live near the water, the narrow walkway gave the home a quirky, nautical feel. On a practical note, by not having to build a complete floor, the bridge permitted more light to reach the kitchen area.

On the first floor are three bedrooms. The master bedroom is on the second floor. The house is furnished in an Asian style and has a number of interesting features, such as a train-carriage basin mounted on the dining room wall. The basin folds out of the wall and can be used as a fingerbowl or ice bucket.

The owners must share their garage with their neighbours. To overcome access difficulties, the owners have installed a car turntable.
