The owners of this property had just completed extensive renovations to their house and wanted a new driveway more in sympathy with their new-look home.

The owners chose pavers from the new Appian Paving range. The advantage of Appian Pavers is their versatility: they allow you to design your own patterns; alternatively, you can select from the wide range of shapes, colours and styles that are available.

The pavers are easy to lay - there is virtually a paver for every possible shape you might want. The advantage is, therefore, that there is minimal or no cutting required. They're suitable for any outdoor area, and come in a number of different styles, including art deco, Federation and Tuscan. The pavers are made from either concrete or reconstituted natural limestone.

Sand lodging in notches on the side of the pavers locks them firmly together, reducing movement and wear and tear. This system also makes it easy for the home handyman or woman to install the pavers themselves.

The procedure for installation was fairly simple. First, the area was prepared for the pavers. The old concrete driveway was torn up. It was then covered in rubble consisting of crushed gravel, granite and fine rock. The area was then flattened out using a plate compacter. Then the area was covered with a layer of sand cement, and this was screed level.

Next, the pavers were laid. Once all the pavers were in place, sand was swept into the cracks. Finally, a plate compacter, pushed over the pavers, secured them into position.
