| Renovation Rescue: the house |
| Renovating a house in just 48 hours is no easy task. But, it's amazing the difference a good clean, coat of paint and some new furniture can make. |

While the Scotlands enjoy the sun and surf in Queensland, the Our House team work their magic at home.
EXTERIOR First, the exterior was cleaned with a Gerni High Pressure Water Cleaner. This was also used to clean the gutters and paving. Trestles and planks were hired from Kennards Hire, to reach those hard to clean places. The gate and timber trimmings on the house were painted Mist Green using a Dulux Weathershield paint to match the Colourbond guttering. We used a 10 litre can.
DECK Also outside, the deck required Shirl's complete attention. Termites and dryrot had caused irreversible damage to the posts and central bearer, so these were replaced. Many of the joists were also in poor condition. Rather than replacing these, it is easier to reinforce them by nailing new joists alongside. We hired nail guns from Active Hire to renovate the deck.
The deck was topped off with new treated pine floorboards and a green Paraline clothesline. Leveson's Hired Interiors added a steamer chair.
PAINT Inside, we used paints from the Dulux Suede Effects range, including Purple Storm, Cypress Green and Tuscan Gold. There are 20 colours to choose from and can be mixed with different colours from the Tuscan Effects range.
Upstairs, we created several feature walls Tuscan Gold in the main bedroom and Andrew's room, and Purple Storm in Alison's bedroom. It is easy to create the look of suede, using two coats of Dulux Suede Effects. The effect takes about half an hour to materialise, depending on the temperature.
To apply Dulux Suede Effects paint, simply roll or brush the first coat. Leave to dry, then apply the top coat with a brush. Use a wide brush, working in a random cris-cross fashion. Remember to overlap the cris-cross areas for an even suede effect. Thinning the Dulux Suede Effects paint is not recommended.
We used two tins of Tuscan Gold and Purple Storm, and one tin of Cypress Green. We also used Dulux Super Enamel High Gloss in Vivid White on one door.
KITCHEN The laminate on the kitchen bench tops was bright yellow and in need of a facelift. This was replaced with Blue Silk, from Formica's Soft Watercolours range. A new-look bench top was made from 32mm MDF and cut into a gentle wave. Two sheets of Blue Silk Formica give the bench a rough surfaced, hard wearing finish.
To provide more bench room, a small raised shelf was built for the microwave. A new sink was also installed Regent 16 with a Verona single lever tap from Omega. As the house has a dishwasher, the smaller sink area provides more bench space.
The kitchen was painted Tuscan Gold from the Dulux Suede Effects range. Leveson's Hired Interiors added the finishing touch a rectangular plate of oranges, a yellow bowl of pineapples, small white jugs and baskets.
STYLIST MAKEOVER One of the most effective ways to speed up the sale of a house is to use the services of a professional stylist. Leveson's Hired Interiors have been in the business for 12 years and are one of the Sydney's leading stylist companies. With their stylish touch and huge warehouse of stock, most of their properties take just five weeks to sell.
Chris Leveson and her son, Tim, began their work on the Scotland's house with a quick walk-through and a chat with Tara about the new paint. Then it was out with the old and in with the new. Nearly all the furniture was put into storage, with the exception of the beds, kids' desks and shelving.
The look the Levesons wanted to create was comfortable and modern, with a touch of luxury. At the same time, it was important to keep the house user-friendly. They also decided to give the master bedroom a much needed "romantic touch".
In the entrance, they removed the coat rack and put in a console, pot plant, decorative pears and a colourful print. Two large clay pots were put outside the front door. Next, the velour couch in the family room was replaced with a water hyacinth sofa (soft cane) with scatter cushions.
The pine furniture in the dining room was replaced with an iron and glass table, and upholstered high back chairs in brown and fawn check. An old medieval trunk in the loungeroom makes a great sideboard. A leather lounge was also added, along with a wooden bowl, metal lamp and picture.
In the master bedroom, they left the bed, but removed the desks and bedside table. These were replaced with two dark timber butler trays, tall metal lamps, a dark woven cane armchair, small floor rug and two pictures. The bed was dressed with European pillows and woolly blanket. The posters were removed from the kid's bedrooms.
The small curtain in the toilet was removed to let in more light. Blue bottles, a bowl of soaps and a bowl of pebbles were placed in the bathroom after the Scotlands' shampoo bottles and toiletries were put out of sight.
