Mornings can be a rush when you have to feed the family, pack school lunches and put the kids on the bus. The last thing you need is to search for something to wear to work and then have to iron it. The solution is a well planned wardrobe.
The first step is to call the experts who will help with the design. Creative Wardrobes worked with the owners of this home to come up with the ideal design.
The team decided there were several essentials for this wardrobe:- Half hanging for trousers, suits, skirts and shirts.
- Full length hanging for winter coats and dresses.
- Drawers for lingerie, socks, personal items and t-shirts.
- Open shelving for bulky items like woolly jumpers and hats.
- Pigeon-hole storage boxes for shoes and knick-knacks.
- Work bench that can hold a sewing machine for repairs on the run.
- Good lighting.
- Flexible design so it can be changed with the owner's needs.
The first step is to install drawers and a bench under the window area. The owners want to give this room a dual purpose walk-in robe and sewing room, so the bench is set at 73cm which will be a good working height when it doubles as a sewing and dressing table.
Side panels, bench and facings are dressed in pale beech veneer. A cheaper option is to use white melamine. We are working with veneer because it fits with the style of the house.
The drawers are fitted with inserts so sewing accessories can be stored neatly. The inserts can also be used for organising socks, jewellery and lingerie. The drawers and shelves are 30cm wide just right for folded t-shirts and jumpers.
Floor to ceiling panels hold the hanging system together. Each unit has an upper shelf for storing items like suitcases which aren't used very often. Horizontal hanging poles divide each unit in two, giving the perfect length for hanging skirts and shirts. A good height is approximately 120cm off the ground (these are easily moved later if you decide to re-organise the wardrobe).
A tidy option for storing trousers is a TrousAmatic. This fitting slides out of the hanging unit on rollers. High strength nylon racks fan out, ready to be loaded with trousers. The unit then slides back into its special housing, keeping pants organised and ready to wear.
A small hanging space is devoted to full length coats while jumpers and bulky items are easy to store and find on open shelves. Shoes are stored in pairs in small pigeon holes.
Belts and ties aren't forgotten, they have their own hanging rack. The belt rack is screwed onto a side panel and has a series of six upward pointing hooks. The tie rack is similar but the hooks are replaced with slim tie clips.
The only thing that's been left out is a full length mirror, but we've found the perfect spot for it on the back of the bedroom door.
