Remember when Hypercolour t-shirts were popular? Well now you can apply the same technique to your walls, changing the colour of your room to suit the temperature. Tara trials three new paint finishes from Covered in Paint and gives a tired old bedroom a fantastic new face.

Nick Hatzistergos comes from the world of information technology. However, he has given his old job the boot and moved into specialist paint finishes. Nick has opened a retail outlet called Covered in Paint, in Sydney's inner-west. His customers can view samples the traditional way or see virtual options on the computer. Mail-order is available for regional and inter-state buyers.

For our bedroom makeover, Tara's using Covered in Paint's Living Colour in a warm peach and pale yellow. This is a 100% acrylic paint for ceilings and walls and is available in a limited range of colours from pastels to mid-tones. The low sheen paint is designed to change colour with the ambient temperature of its surrounds and is strictly for interior use.

As a guide, the paler colour appears between 8° and 16° celcius, while the darker colour appears between 16° and 29° celcius. It's completely washable, so brushes and rollers can be cleaned with water. It has a coverage of 10-12 square metres per litre.

If the surface has been previously painted, prepare it by washing, lightly sanding and removing any dust. If the surface is new, apply an appropriate sealer undercoat. When the surface is prepared, paint on two coats of Living Colour. This paint is light sensitive and shouldn't be used on surfaces that get direct sunlight. On these areas, conventional paint should be used (in a matching colour, if desired).

Tara's also sprucing up an old pine blanket box with a metallic finish and a mirror with a glass bead paint effect. The blanket box was painted with Metalessence, a water based enamel acrylic designed to provide a hard wearing and durable finish that can be tinted various colours. Metalessence is similar to metallic nail polish. After suitable preparation, it can be applied by brush or sprayed onto ceilings, walls, woodwork or steel.

First, Tara applied a water based acrylic undercoat to seal the box (a tinted version of the metallic colour chosen), then two coats of Metalessence with a brush using criss-cross strokes. This is a directional paint and care should be taken to achieve an even, desired finish.

Metalessence can be brushed straight onto a pre-painted surface, but if it's a particularly light colour, a tinted undercoat may be required to avoid the original colour showing through. Once again, brushes and rollers wash up in water and you get 10-12 square metre coverage per litre.

The final finish was used to jazz up a pine mirror. Tara used Glass Finish to paint the mirror an antique white acrylic and the "special" finish was applied before the paint dried. While still wet, sprinkle hundreds of tiny glass beads over the surface, giving it a unique texture and sheen. These are the same beads used on pedestrian crossings to reflect car headlights.

A handy tip: use a drop sheet to catch runaway beads. This saves cleaning up time later and stops hundreds of small beads embedding in the carpet. Brush off any loose beads then seal with a water-based urethane.
