With the help of Laminex Industries, Caroma and Dorf Design Tapware, this old bathroom gets a gleaming facelift.

The original bathroom compromised of a bath, shower, toilet, vanity and laundry area; it was dated with old-fashioned tiles and colours. To create a functional modern looking bathroom, Laminex Industries commissioned a designer to come up with some ideas.

First, the walls were stripped and the bathroom gutted. The new bathroom required changes to the plumbing and piping so part of the floor was ripped up for the new drainage. The slab underneath the floor also needed to be altered. When just a shell remained, the bathroom was ready for treatment.

The floor was waterproofed with a fibreglass based compound paint. It isn't necessary to waterproof the walls before laying wet area panelling but it does add extra protection. In this case, the wall was waterproofed up to 100mm with two coats.

The next step was to cut to size and install the wet area panelling. DIY is an option but you should consult a professional to ensure waterproofing is sufficient. If the bathroom is already waterproofed, simply tidy the area and lay the panelling. We used a 3mm silicon expansion join for this bathroom but plastic cover strips can also be used.

Wet area panelling is purchased in sheets and available in various sizes. It is a wood based product made with resins and cooked. The panelling is cut with a normal panel saw and glued to the stud like Gyprock. The panels can be placed straight onto tiles.

The floor was retiled to fit with the new design. New look fittings were installed including a toilet, vanity, bath, shower wet area panelling, cupboard and glass wall. The cupboard was made specifically for this bathroom and Laminex Industries will recommend an appropriate tradesperson for the job.

Laminex Industries' LIVING™ bathroom furniture is used to complete the transformation.
