With two young children in the family the laundry in this home gets plenty of use and while a major renovation for the whole of the house is planned for the future, the owners think it needs a cheap and cheerful face-lift. The laundry churns out up to three loads of washing per day which means it can't be out of action for long so Rebecca came up with some quick and easy ways of making it more welcoming.
First everything needs to be cleared from the laundry, including whitegoods.
Walls The laundry's flaking wall paint was removed with a broken piece of brick, rubbed over its surface. The painter filled cracks in the wall with a quick drying cement. Next the walls were primed with an undercoat. We used Prepcoat Acrylic Sealer UnderCoat by Dulux. This was left to dry for 24 hours. A 'Mediterranean Blue' acrylic paint from the Dulux Tuscan Effects range was painted onto the laundry walls. Two coats were needed, with at least four hours drying time left between each coat. NB: Because the laundry is a damp area, an anti-mould additive should be mixed with the paint. We used one called VCI75 from 'The Flood Company'. It is concentrated so for one litre of paint around five drops should be used.
Floor To avoid spending a lot of money, the laundry's cement floor was painted with a non-slip "Rich Terracotta" flooring paint which goes on dark but dries to a lighter shade. The paint requires two hours drying time. Berger Jet Dry Non Slip meets Australian standards for slip resistance and is available in over 100 colours.
To get the laundry up and running again, whitegoods were put back in place.
Storage An old concrete trough was replaced with a new model for storing bulky garden and laundry items. Because it is a wet area in the laundry a wooden bathmat (painted red) was placed in front of the trough. Two new MDF shelves, painted 'Signal Red' were installed. Old plastic storage containers were thrown out and replaced with cane baskets brightened with yellow spraypaint. These are to store items such as nails, tools and small bits and pieces. Mops and brooms were hung from the back of the laundry door on brass hooks. A dirty clothes basket was placed next to the washing machine and a spare cane basket hung from the wall.
Hanging space Rebecca suspended an old wooden ladder from the ceiling to provide airing and drying space.
Decorations Begging for some attention, the old window frame was painted in Signal Red and a mock blind made from a colourful tea-towel was hung using self-adhesive velcro. An antique washboard was hung from the wall. A small terracotta pot planted with fake gerberas was hung near the window as real plants couldn't cope with the humidity.
