| Wallpaper Nursery Makeover |
| A baby on the way ensures a rapid makeover for this former playroom. |

Due to an imminent arrival of a younger sibling, this child's play area is to be transformed into a charming nursery. A brighter, more stimulating colour scheme is to be chosen, although the room must not end up looking too "babyish" as it will be the child's room as he or she grows up. As the sex of the new arrival is not known beforehand, it must also appeal to both sexes.
1 The trims are painted off-white, while Dulux Shortbread is used above the picture rail.
2 "Party Stripe" wallpaper is then professionally hung. Wallpaper is used as there is a wide range of patterns to choose from and so a greater diversity can be obtained with minimal effort. The pattern chosen will give the room a warmer feel. Much of the recurring theme of this room can be obtained from a one-stop shop.
3 A matching drop fabric blind ("Party Spot"), with ribbon ties is used on the window frame. Using a block out interlining prevents kids from waking too early due to early sun rises. Curtains tend to make a room look smaller, so are not practical in this case.
4 Extra storage is provided by a small net hammock, strung across one of the room's corners from the picture rails. This is ideal for holding soft toys. Larger or heavy toys should not be placed in the hammock for safety reasons.
5 Next, a DIY, simple shelf system is attached to the wall, and painted in a matching colour (Dulux Shortbread).
6 The wardrobe is retained, but it needs a quick makeover. This is done using left-over rectangular pieces of material from the blind. You may need to buy some extra, depending on the size of your wardrobe. The fabric is stuck to the wardrobe with PVA glue. Use a card to smooth it out evenly before attaching the fabric. Braid is then stuck with craft glue around the outside edge as an attractive border.
7 Felt is used in a similar fashion, on the lower doors of the wardrobe, together with braid as before. Cut out decorative shapes, such as flowers, trees and clouds and stick these on to finish the design.
8 The room's given a finishing touch using matching cushions and a table lamp. Decorative bows ("Party Spot" ribbon) can also be tied around the chest of drawer handles to brighten things up. A new quilt was bought for the cot to complement the "bunnies picnic story" theme used in the room. Adding a rocking chair is also a useful accessory for a nursery.
