Ensuite Makeover
A hi-tech transformation for this leaky bathroom.

The seventies floor tiles give this ensuite an out-dated appearance. However the main reason for this makeover is that the waterproofing system has broken down. Water has leaked from the shower into the carpet and the moisture is attracting insect pests.

The renovation work was carried out by "Superior", who specialise in bathroom
renovations and repairs. They are also licensed to perform plumbing and building work. Some innovative products were used in this makeover.

1
First, the floor tiles and wall sheeting holding the tiles were removed to see how serious the damage was. It was found that there had been no waterproofing apart from an old galvanised strip surround which was corroded, causing the shower base to leak, causing damp problems.

2
Angled PVC waterproofing strips were installed to replace the old metal ones. These covered all floor and wall joins in the bathroom. Then new wet area sheeting was attached to the wall.

3
Before damp proofing, the walls were coated in Ultrabond to hold the new tiles in place. (Ultrabond is a new product that can be applied by brush, roller or steel trowel. It can go over almost any surface and can be tiled over in 6-8 hours).

4
Next, Dampfast is used for the damp proofing (applied as above). When the product dries it stays flexible so it won't crack with any movement. The waterproofing cures in 6 hours and then the base or screed can be laid. This lightweight screed is ideal for small areas because it is half the weight of conventional sand and cement mix. The screed was levelled after being laid.

5
Before the floor tiles were laid, a mix of raw cement and water was applied to the screed to help the new tiles bond to the base. The wall tiles were then stuck on using Supamastic. (This product can hold a tile weighing up to 1.5 kilograms).

Tiles from Amber's Pompei range were used for the floors and walls. A selection of tiles was randomly placed around the room, matching border tiles that were part of the way up the wall, together with other white tiles and aqua pencil borders.
