This youngster’s bedroom needs an injection of colour to bring it to life - through the tried and tested art of “stamping”, using a new range of silicon stamp designs. The main advantage of stamping is that it produces a similar effect to stencilling with greater ease of application. Matt-finish painted walls are the easiest to stamp as there is little chance of sliding.

1
Apply a stamped fish and starfish border (above the top of the panelling in this example), on the wall surface which has been pre-painted a bright green. The furniture has also been given a distressed blue paint finish. Before you begin, mark out where you want your fish and starfish designs to go. Use a timber strip to help you space the stamps at 30cm intervals, first marking the wood as a guide, then the wall. Continue working your way round the wall.

2
Pour a small quantity of paint onto a plate and roll the roller backwards and forwards a few times to ensure that it is saturated but not dripping with paint. Roll over the stamp once or twice to ensure full and even coverage.

3
Start stamping carefully. To achieve a solid design look re-apply the paint after every stamp. Mistakes can be corrected easily by wiping off with a damp cloth.

4
All furniture is decorated with sea stamps that are coloured picnic, gladwater, silver and watermelon red. NB: Mistakes cannot be corrected so easily on certain items of furniture, so test first.

5
Next, the chest of drawers, bedside table, children’s table setting and shadow box are stamped in a similar manner. The fabric covered pelmets are stamped with fish and scallops.

6
Bed linen and cushions are then stamped with morocco yellow and watermelon red sea designs. One handy tip is to cut out separate pieces of fabric, stamp those and then sew onto cushions for a decorative contrasting finish. The lampshade is stamped with a border of sea designs.

7
We completed the job by brightening the white floor mat with a separate fabric border that is stamped with sea designs and then sewn on around the mat.

NB: When it comes to stamping on fabric, the best results are achieved on finely woven fabrics with little or no weave. Cottons, silks and plain sheeting are ideal. Before stamping, iron the fabric and spread it over a flat, hard surface. Mistakes cannot be corrected when done in fabric paint so practice on some similar scrap material beforehand.
