| Bathroom / Laundry Makeover |
| A much needed update for the smallest room in the house. |

This combined bathroom and laundry is in desperate need of a makeover. The laundry has been included in the bathroom in order to save space. The owners' "wish list" includes more storage space, some form of heating and a re-design to make the room appear larger.
1 The bathroom is first stripped, leaving the original tiles in place. The original mortar behind the tiles looked "fragile" and so new tiles are laid over the originals. One wall is also shared with the neighbour, and so the least structural disturbance, the better.
2 The sliding door was moved to make a built in area for the laundry. The vanity and toilet are moved so that the toilet bowl isn’t the first thing that is seen on entering the bathroom. In this case it was discovered that the original under floor plumbing was illegal. Fixing this problem added around $1000 to the total cost of the renovation.
3 The bathroom floor slab is then re-laid and the waterproofing process begun. During the building makeover, the new toilet can be placed loosely in position, allowing it to be used with the aid of a bucket of water, which is preferable to a quick trip to the backyard!
4 Having laid PVC waterproofing sheets over the floor in the shower area, thicker sheets and a wall lining finish off the basics of the shower installation. A 9mm wall sheeting is next added, the thickness chosen specifically to hide any unevenness in the wall. Holes are then cut for the fixtures and fittings.
5 Underfloor heating is provided in the form of a plastic matting, heated by an electrical circuit controlled by a thermostat. The mat can be easily cut to the shape of the bathroom floor and is hot-glued down before tiled flooring is added over the top.
6 New ceramic tiles with a hand-made look are laid, and the bathroom accessories chosen. A good tip is to try and buy all these bits and pieces under one roof, in order to save costs. A wide variety of tapware is now available, and is certainly not cheap.
7 A frameless 6mm shower screen is chosen to give a streamlined, see-though look, and is one of the last items to go in, as the new tiles affect the fitting dimensions.
8 Finally, shelving and cabinets (including a handy, hinged laundry hamper) are added. They were made offsite by a joiner.

Cost Total renovation cost around $12,500.
