The grandfather clock is no doubt the grandest, most statuesque and enduring of all clocks, but it's probably also the most expensive. Prices average between $5000 and $10,000, with antiques fetching $20,000 and more. Vic Prance says that today people look for things that last. A grandfather clock goes from generation to generation, down through the family.

1
Grandfather Vic's Clock Company started in 1981. There are three kit designs, with options for different movements and accessories. The timber used is Cedar, ( a soft wood ), or Beech, ( a hard wood ).
2
If you buy your clock by email or phone, three boxes will arrive - one with about 50 pieces of pre-cut timber, one with the movements and one with the weights. It takes about 40 hours to construct but the instructions are clear and detailed.

3
Everything you need for the job is included, except the glass and a few basic tools. A combination of glue and screws ensures the finished clock is quite strong. Once the timber case is assembled, it gets sanded and stained and then it's ready for the pre-assembled movement.

Cost
Clocks cost $2,800 to $3,500 depending on size. You could save a couple of hundred dollars by choosing a chain-drive rather than the cable-drive model. The cable-drive is a more modern movement and has a couple of additional features, such as a second hand and an automatic night chime cut-off.
