Shirl's been wanting to make a shoe storage box for a while, and now he has the perfect excuse! He had a letter from Rosetta Munt from Blackbutt in Queensland asking for exactly that. And to make it extra special for Rosetta, he's finishing it off with some bamboo ply paneling.
Bamboo ply panels are available through Bamboojungle and come in a variety of thicknesses. They are sold in 1200mm x 2400mm sheets. We used 2mm panels which cost $39.60 per sheet (plus delivery).
STEP BY STEP 1 Make the main carcass by screwing and gluing the ends to the bottom and fixing the back rail in place. Attach the back to the unit by screwing and gluing.2 Mark out a radius on the side pieces of the shoe compartment using a stick. Use a nail as a pivot and hold your pencil at the end and trace an arc. This will form a quarter circle. Cut out the arcs with a jigsaw. 3 Screw and glue the front lid to the base piece. 4 Attach the curved sides to the front and base. Divide the curved sides equally into three segments, then attach the divisions by screwing through the sides. 5 Cut the bamboo sheeting by approx. 20mm overall to allow for trimming. 6 Attach the bamboo sheeting to the outside surface with contact adhesive. Apply contact to both surfaces and allow time to become tack free. Use some dowels are spacers to aid in alignment. Working from the centre, remove the dowels one at a time before applying firm pressure to the face. 7 Connect the complete shoe storage unit to the main body with a piano hinge. 8 Glue and screw the front rail into position. 9 Attach the top by gluing and screwing through the rails. Apply sheeting to the top. 10 Glue and nail edging pieces to exposed edges.
