Instead of buying a new TV cabinet, why not build on what you have already got?

Today we see Shirl build an extension on top of a TV unit. Extra shelving will be installed and the whole unit painted to match new furniture.

Step by Step
1 Sand existing unit back for new paint job. The extension doesn't need to be matching timber as it will all be repainted, so we're using 16mm MDF. The whole unit is glued and screwed together with countersunk screw holes filled and sanded.
2 Assemble supports for unit extension, one at the base of the triangular unit and one at each front corner. We'll use two uprights and two front pieces with bevelled edges for the front supports.
3 Glue and screw each upright to a front piece. The uprights and the front pieces will align at the top. The front piece will sit on the top of the existing unit and the upright extending to the floor.
4 Now attach the two lower shelves to the uprights. These are simply glued and screwed in place, leaving enough room for the television on the top of the existing unit.
5 Before the top shelf goes on, round the edge with a rollover bit in the router. The top shelf will sit above the uprights and back support.
6 Attach some scrap pine battens or strips of 16mm MDF to the base of the top shelf and along the top of the back support to attach and strengthen the 3mm MDF backing. The backing can then be stapled onto the unit and will cover the back of the two upper shelves.
7 Add 3 pieces of decorative moulding under the top shelf to finish.
8 The TV cabinet and new extension is to be painted in Dulux Tusk Tusk to co-ordinate with the blanket box and fireplace trimming in the Lounge Fireplace Makeover.
