Window Shutters
This alternative to curtains is great for blocking out noise and light.

Most people make curtains for their windows, but if you're not into sewing or you want something a bit different, you may consider trying these internal shutters. Not only do they look good, cut down noise and block out light, they're also easy to make.

Step by Step
1 Measure your windows to determine the height and width of your shutters. The windows we're using are 1788mm wide (inside edge) and 1815mm tall (inside edge). We will measure the height of the two separate windows (small and large) so we can place the divider rails at the same height to match.
2 Cut your pine and MDF as per the cutting list or get your local hardware store to pre cut your timber to size. This will obviously vary depending on the size of your window. Remember to leave room for the hinge width when determining how wide each of your shutters should be.
3 Assemble one shutter flat on the MDF backing. The top, bottom and divider rails will sit inside the side rails. You can position the two divider rails at equal distances from the top and bottom. We are making ours to mirror the height of the two window frames so our top section will be smaller than the two bottom sections.
4 The frame of our shutters will be held together with pocket screws. No need to worry about the screw holes as these will be covered by our MDF backing. It helps to screw these together on the backing board as this will keep the frame nice and straight. We are using the Kreg Jig for our pocket screws but you can also dowel and glue together.
5 With the frame done, glue on the backing board. Make sure it's centered then fix it with staples or tacks down one side. Check the frame is square then finish off the stapling.
6 Run a sander over the frame to smooth any rough edges.
7 Repeat process with remaining three shutters.
8 Lay all four shutters together on your surface for decorative finish. On the inside of the panels, put on a decorative edge with a router. We chose a Roman Ogee bit.
9 Next glue the decorative centre piece in the middle of each panel after matching the edges with your router bit. These can then be stapled through the backing board.
10 Paint your shutters giving them a light sand in between the first two coats. We chose Dulux Antique White for the frame and decorative pieces and Dulux Chamois for the visible backing. The reverse of the shutters was also painted Dulux Antique White.
11 Glue and screw two handles on the middle divider of your inside panels.
12 Fit your hinges to the inside of the window pane and between the two shutter panels. The inside panels should fold back onto the other panels when open.
