We received a letter from a viewer, Mrs Tracy Adams, who is frustrated with her vegetables going green from the plastic vegetable rack. She's seen a timber one that will fit beautifully into her country kitchen but was out of her price range. So Shirl is going to make her something similar using solid timber panels called Pine Innovations from Porta. These are square, pre-sanded and ready to use.

Step by Step:
1
Cut all pieces to size as per cutting list.
2
To assemble the base, attach the rails to the legs. They can be dowelled or pocket screwed from the inside of the rails.
3
Assemble the end frames by attaching the rails to the stiles. These can also be dowelled and glued or pocket screwed from inside the face of the rail.
4
Attach the bottom piece and the two top rails to the end frames.
5
Screw the back to the edges of the bottom and top rails. You may screw a block of timber to the inside of the end frame and attach back to this block along the side.
6
Assemble door panel using the same procedure as the end frames.
7
Trim door down to allow for clearance.
8
Attach mini-orb to inside of door frame using screws.
9
Hinge door to cabinet using non-mortice hinges.
10
To attach wire mesh to the face of the side frames, staple first then trim off the excess. Nail on "D" mould to cover the edges of the mesh.
11
Router the front edge and two sides of the top using a rounding over bit.
12
Attach the top to the unit by screwing from the underside of the rail.
13
Fit handle and ball catch.

The material we used for the cabinet is a new product from Porta. Our design required the use of wide boards; one solid piece of timber would not be practical due to the excessive movement and instability. The new product is a laminated board, which means there are several smaller width pieces joined together to form a wide board. The smaller width pieces increase the strength and stability of the board.

We used a Kreg Jig to make this project easier. The Kreg Jig is available in two models: the K2 and the Rocket. We used the K2. Both Kreg Jigs and accessories are available by mail order, with a $10 delivery charge to anywhere in Australia.

The K2 Kreg Jig Kit sells for $245 and the Kreg Rocket costs $125.
