Finding somewhere to store your CDs can be a problem, especially if you don't want them on display. Well, Shirl has a simple solution that combines your CD storage with your lounge room furniture; it's a CD Coffee Table.
Step by Step
Note: Specialised machinery is needed to cut veneered board most effectively; therefore you should take your cutting list to your local cabinetmaker or cut-to-size specialist. He also may be able to apply the edging for an additional charge. The pieces that require edging are indicated after the sizes in the cutting list eg: 2L means 2 long edges and 1S means 1 short edge.
1 Cut all pieces to size then apply edging. Edging can be applied with a standard household iron. Set it to the hottest setting and turn the steam off. Move along the edge slowly giving the glue a chance to melt, push the edging down with a block following the iron. 2 Start assembly by joining the base rails to make a rectangular frame, attaching a leg at each corner. They can either be dowelled and glued or pocket screwed using the Kreg Jig* as we did. 3 Attach base on top of the frame, screwing from the underside of the base. 4 Assemble the drawers by nailing and gluing the front and back between the sides, then the bottom is fixed in the same way. 5 Centrally locate the drawer front in place and attach by screwing from the inside. Drill a hole for the handle in the centre position of the front. The easiest way to find the centre is to draw diagonal lines from corner to corner and the intersecting point is the centre. 6 Place the table ends, divisions and drawers on the base. Attach ends and divisions. Attach one pair of top rails between the ends, sitting across the top of the divisions. Attach a second pair of top rails on the divisions, along their length. These should sit inside the first pair of top rails. Trim top rails as needed. 7 Attach the top by screwing from below. Attach drawer facings centrally to front and back of drawers. Add handles. 8 Thoroughly sand entire unit to remove sharp edges and apply desired finish. We used clear polyurethane in a satin finish.

We used a Kreg Jig to make this project easier. The Kreg Jig is available in two models: the K2 and the Rocket. We used the Rocket, which comes with a face clamp to hold the timber to the jig. Both Kreg Jigs and accessories are available by mail order, with a $10 delivery charge to anywhere in Australia.
The K2 Kreg Jig Kit sells for $245 and the Kreg Rocket costs $125.
