Shirl creates a simple but elegant maple valet for the bedroom.

We often find it hard to part with outdated items, especially when we use them frequently. Shirl is constructing a simple but elegant maple valet to replace a 70s vinyl and chrome valet the owner is finding hard to let go.

Step by Step
1Using an existing wooden coat hanger, trace around it to form a template for the top hanger and two base supports. You'll need to continue the shape to give it more height and jigsaw a piece out of the bottom in a semi-circular shape as per the diagram.
2 Using a pencil round router bit, rout the edges of the three "coat hangers". Do not rout the bottom edges.
3 Cut the base struts to size and attach with screws.
4 Cut the uprights to size and screw to outside of base supports.
5 Cut horizontal trouser racks to size, router the top edge to prevent a crease line forming and screw to vertical supports.
6 Cut a small slot in the top of the vertical pieces as well as the hanger and glue hanger in place.
7 Use Maple Putty to fill all visible holes, sand and apply two coats of clear estapol.
