Fine china makes a fantastic wedding gift or family heirloom, but if you store it in the cupboard with the rest of your crockery, it's bound to get chipped. With Shirl's wall cupboard you can display your china and keep it well out of harms way.

STEP BY STEP
Making the unit:

1 Cut all the pieces to size as per the cutting list. Cutting in the listed order will help utilise the MDF sheet most effectively. Use your backing board as a work surface when you start to assemble the unit so that you have a smooth, flat surface.
2 Mark out the shape of the end section, as per diagram. Remember — measure twice, cut once.
3 Cut the shape with a jigsaw. Take extra care when cutting the sides as any wobbles will be duplicated later. Slow the speed on your jigsaw for greater control.
4 Cut the shape of the end piece with a jigsaw and repeat the procedure for the opposite end.
5 After trimming the ends, label them left and right. It's a good idea to label the top as well.
6 Lay both ends flat on the bench, making sure they're in pairs, then mark the positions of the shelves. Pre-drill the screw holes.
7 Mark out the positions of the divisions on the shelves, then pre-drill the screw holes.
8 If desired, round the front edges of the shelves with a router.
9 Sand the faces of the ends, shelves, top and bottom before assembly.
10 Glue and screw the ends to the top, bottom and shelves, followed by the drawer divisions. Allow the screw heads to penetrate below the surface for filling.
11 If you want rounded edges use a router on the end pieces.
12 Mark out and pre-drill screw holes through the back piece.
13 Turn the unit over, glue and screw the back to the completed unit and attach the eye hooks with equal spacing.
14 Using a two part filler, fill all screw holes. It is best to slightly overfill the holes to allow for sanding.

Making the drawers:
1 You may have noticed on the cutting list, that the drawer fronts were cut oversized. This is done to allow enough room for a "half hole" handle. The easiest way to do this is drill an ordinary hole with a speed bore, then cut the top off (through the centre).
2 Before assembling the drawers, check sizes for fit. Make any adjustments.
3 Assemble drawer boxes with a quick drying glue or PVA. The drawers go together in the usual fashion — front and back between the sides. If you use PVA, the drawers will need clamping. When nailing MDF, do not place the nails close to the edge or the board will split.
4 Nail and glue the bottoms in place.
5 Once the drawers have set, sand and flush any joints.
6 Apply the desired finish and attach the unit to the wall by screwing through the back. Be sure to find substantial fixing (eg. Wall studs) when attaching to the wall.
