Delivering newspapers is a great way for kids to earn extra pocket money, but carting them on the back of a bike makes the job long and hard. Shirl has a great design for a newspaper trolley that will make the morning round light and easy and have everyone home in time for breakfast.
The easy to assemble newspaper trolley can be constructed from ply wood that's lying around the garage or workshop. We decorated our trolley in a soapbox derby style flashy red to make it go faster and a lucky number nine.
STEP BY STEP 1 Start by making the frame of the trolley box, a simple 415mm x 900mm frame glued and screwed with butt joints out of 30mm x 50mm pine (See Diagram A). 2 Fix the mesh base onto the frame using fence staples. 3 Glue and screw the sides and ends of the frame to form the box of the trolley. 4 Screw the pine rail in place 300mm from the front. 5 Fix the metal plate 20mm x 70mm for the axle then add the wheels, making sure they clear the rail and the sides (See Diagram A). 6 Glue and screw the pine legs (40mm x 35mm x 220mm) in place at the back end of the trolley (See Diagram). 7 Drill holes in the side for the handles (See Diagram). Attach the pine handles with the 70mm nuts, bolts and washers. NB: We've given two options for the angle of the handles. 8 Finally, paint the trolley. We chose racing car red and a big number nine. It's gloss acrylic to guard against the weather.
