We make a simple kids' picnic table and bench seating.
Prepare your cutting list as outlined under materials. To get a clean "bite" when you drill, punch starter holes using a nail. Speed up the marking out process by lining up the various lengths of matching timber alongside one another and marking off across using a ruler.
Drill 9mm holes through the top and bottom rails, see diagram 1. (Drill a smaller pilot or guide hole first and then increase your drill bit size to 9mm).
Next, drill 9mm holes through the cross supports, see diagram 2.
Drill 9mm holes through the centre of the packers, see diagram 3.
Attach the seat and table cross supports to the top and bottom rails using the 75mm bolts, nuts and washers. Insert the packer pieces between the supports using 100mm bolts. Refer to diagram 4. Repeat the process for both sides.
Use a saw to cut the cross supports flush with the rails. For each of the seats, four slats are used (evenly spaced), while five wider pieces make the table top.
Drill and screw on the table top (100mm x 25mm). Do the same to the seat sections (50mm x 25mm) using 45mm screws and allow them to overhang the rails by 75mm. See diagram 5.
Get rid of any sharp edges using fine sandpaper. Cut the surplus ends off the bolts and sand smooth to protect your kids' legs. Finish with Danish oil or stain as desired.
