Here is a project that a youngster can handle, thanks to a viewer's letter from seven-year-old Lachlan Stokes. Using basic tools, we help him build a simple shelf to display his sporting trophies.
Start by sawing 3 x 600mm lengths of pine using a handsaw. Use a square and pencil to draw the cut lines. Tip for youngsters: place your saw to the left of the line and line up using your thumb to guide the blade, keeping it well above the teeth.
On one piece (backing board), mark 30mm down from the long edge, and glue and nail a 600m piece (shelf) into place. Fasten the bottom piece (shelf) in the same way, but this time flush with the bottom of the backing board. You should now have a backing board with two shelves attached.
Cut the plywood into 2 x 320mm lengths. Then draw the shape of footballs onto the two pieces and cut them using a coping saw. Sand all the edges to round out the shape.
Glue and nail the footballs onto the sides of the shelves with an equal overhang on the top and bottom.
Nail punch the nails and then fill the indentations with putty.
Sand all the edges with the sandpaper.
Paint according to your preferred football code!
