The underbed storage box is the solution to those unorganised bedrooms. At least now when things are thrown under the bed in a hurry, they will be easier to find again!

1
First measure the distance from the floor to the underside of your bed to ensure that the box will fit with castors on.

2
Cut out the base from 16mm MDF to size (560mm x 752mm), making sure all corners are square.

3
Cut out the sides from 190mm x 19mm radiata pine. To mitre the corners, mark a line down the width of the first piece, turn it on its edge, and draw a line at 45 degrees (using a square). Continue the line down the other side, then cut. See diagram 1.

4
Repeat step three until you have four sides. Tip: when working out the lengths around the base, work from the short points of the mitered corner cuts. See diagram two. The sides should measure: two @ 752mm inside, 790mm outside, two @ 562mm inside, 600mm outside. See diagram three.

5
Glue and nail (4 x 50mm nails) through the corners. Nail punch all nails. See diagram four.

6
Set your square to 8mm, and draw a guideline for your nails all the way around. Then glue and nail sides to the base (50mm nails).

7
Cut the lid out of 4mm ply. Place the box upside down on top of the ply and mark in pencil all the way around and then cut.

8
Mark a line 20mm in from the outside edge all the way around on the underside of the lid. See diagram five. Then cut 50mm x 19mm radiata pine to fit on the inside of the marked line. See diagram 6. Glue and nail. Nail from the top of the lid using 16mm pins.

9
Drill two large holes at either end (big enough to take your fingers), 50mm in from each edge. This is for lifting the lid off.

10
Screw castors to the bottom of the box, 50mm in from each side. See diagram 7.

11
Lightly sand the entire box and putty over the punched nail holes. Stain as desired.
