Shadow boxes are one of our most popular viewer requests and are great for showing off your collectables. The dimensions can be altered to suit your purpose.
1 Cut two lengths of pine to 900mm each. These are the top and bottom pieces of the box. Then cut four lengths to 860mm each. These are the uprights. Glue and screw together. See diagram one. Make sure, when assembling, to use the smooth or "good" side of the timber in places where it will be seen.
2 Cut out eight shelves to fit tightly. When you decide on the individual layout that suits your needs, nail into position. Cut a sheet of ply or MDF to fit over the back of the shelf unit and set it in approximately 3mm from the outside edge. (The box or shelving unit will end up being 900mm square, so cut the backing to measure 894mm x 894mm).
Tip
To ensure the box is square, simply measure the diagonals across the back and make sure they are the same.
3 Next, cut out the moulding to go around the top and bottom. Glue and nail into place. Two different decorative types of wood moulding can be used. Crown moulding is used for the top of the shadow box, whilst transom or picture rail moulding is used at the bottom. In our example just crown moulding is used at the top of the box. See diagram two.
4 Stain, paint or varnish to suit. Fix the shadow box to the wall. See diagram three.
