This compact, foldaway version of a dog kennel is ideal if you only need protection for your pet during the cooler months, if you are short of space or if you are travelling (visiting relatives, etc). This design is made from ply and the kennel will simply slot together, held in place by several dowels.
1 Cut the plywood panels as shown. See diagram 1. Remember to adapt the sizes given to the size of your dog.
2 Mark out the plywood, ready to cut out the corner joints. Refer to the plan view of the corner joint. See diagram 2.
3 Cut out a 20mm wide slot on each corner of the side panels. See diagram 3. Familiarilise yourself with the joint detail at each corner. "A" is 70mm from the edges and 100mm from the top and bottom.
4 Cut out the corners from the front and back panels, ("B"-100mm x 70mm), as per diagram 3.
To assemble, place the front and back panels "B" through the slots. Drill two 9mm holes in each of the tenons, ensuring the joints are held tight when dowel pieces are positioned through them.
5 To attach the lid, screw two pieces of timber (50 x 50 x 700mm) to the underside of the lid, 125mm in from each edge. See diagram 4. For added security, two lengths of the same timber can also be screwed to the underneath edge of the lid, and the dowel method used to secure it.
Drill two (9mm) holes as before, through the timber lengths and into the side of the kennel. Dowels placed through on either side will secure the lid. Finish by using a sealer as added weather protection and your pet will feel as safe as houses.
