Margaret Ng of Ascot Vale in Victoria makes this viewer request. This ladder will be used to display her quilts. It can also be used as a towel rack or to display pots and pans. The ladder is made from pine.
First, mark out the positions for the dowels on the 90mm x 30mm pieces of pine as shown in diagram 1.
Using a 20mm speed bore bit, drill into the marked positions for the dowels, but only about 15mm into the timber. Repeat for the other side rail. Next, drill small holes (8mm bit) through the centre of each of these marked positions to facilitate the pieces being screwed together later on.
Cut a round shaped at both ends for each rail. Use an electric hand sander to finish off. See diagram 2.
Next, draw a heart-shaped template on some card, cut out and trace around this at the centre of the rail in between the dowel positions. There will be eight hearts to cut out in total. Do this by drilling three holes in each (8mm bit) and proceed to cut the shape out using the jigsaw blade. Sand smooth. See diagram 3.
Repeat step four for the other side rail.
Cut four pieces of dowel at 800mm long, for the rungs. Apply the wood glue inside the dowel speed bore drill holes and insert the dowels into the holes, ensuring that the dowel goes all the way in.
Repeat for the other rail of the ladder. Sand lightly all over. Your ladder is now ready to use for display or further painting or staining if needed. Note that the rungs are not all evenly spaced, but this is to do with the original viewer request and to display quilts to her satisfaction!
