1
Although most of today's toys are made of plastic and hardly last a year or two, we've discovered how to pass on a treasured heirloom to the next generation and beyond, in the form of a wooden rocking horse.

2
Toymaker Chris Woolcock shows us that the traditional craft of making and repairing wooden rocking horses is still alive. Trained by his grandfather, he has been making and repairing rocking horses for 25 years and creating wooden toys for even longer. For years Chris was known as the village toymaker in Tasmania until he recently moved to Sydney.

3
Over the years Chris has made and restored thousands of rocking horses, some trotting out as far away as New York and London. He enjoys working with natural and recycled materials such as timber from fallen trees.

4
Why have your rocking horse restored? Chris says people repair their rocking horses for nostalgic reasons, and also so they can become an heirloom to pass from generation to generation. Another important use for restored rocking horses is in shop displays.

5
Chris uses a combination of techniques and tools to repair the horses. Sometimes a horse may be delivered in bits and pieces in a box. In this case the repair can take a week or more. Chris has been known to work on horses up to 200 years old. New horses take around two days to make.

Cost
$350-$1000 to repair an old horse. From $750 upwards, plus freight, for a new horse.
