New Life for Old Benchtops
How to rejuvenate a tired old timber benchtop.

Timber benchtops look great in any kitchen. However, they are susceptible to water damage. The benchtop we fixed had been in the kitchen for 10 years. Overall, it had weathered well although there was some water damage around the edges of the sink.

First, the sink was taken out and the grunge that had built up around it over the years was removed with a cabinet scraper. This is a simple device consisting of a sheet of steel in a wooden handle. It gives a nice smooth finish without gouging out the timber.

In some areas the mould damage to the wood was quite deep. To remove these stains a belt sander was used. It is advisable to take care when using a belt sander, as they can be quite savage on the timber. Next, an orbital sander was used for the rest of the surface. This was finished off with some fine sandpaper and a sanding block.

Once the sanding was completed, the benchtop was given a rubdown with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits to pick up all the dust. Finally, the surface was given a couple of coats of polyurethane to achieve a brand-new look.
