If you have some spare filing cabinets in your office, why not turn them into a desk? Shirl shows you how.
NB: Remember to choose timber carefully check for any twists or cupping before you buy it.
1 Once you have chosen the better side of each timber piece, number them and mark the face. 2 Each piece is to be joined with dowels, so you need to mark the position for each hole. Space each 200mm apart. You could also use a biscuit jointer. 3 Drill holes. Note that if you are using a dowelling jig make sure you clamp it facing in the same direction for each hole in all pieces. It is best to fit the clamp on the underside of each piece. 4 Put glue in every hole. Tap dowels into the outside desktop pieces. 5 Hold all pieces together in a cramp making sure that the centre joins are not pushing up. Shirl had two cramps on the bottom and two on top. Leave until glue is dry. 6 Cut four 40mm x 19mm x 490mm rails. These will be attached to the underside of the desktop. 7 Cut two 90mm x 30mm x 1830mm rails. These will run the length of the underside. 8 Measure the width of your filing cabinets and cut notches about 20mm deep at each end of the long rails. 9 Countersink two holes into each of the notches. Attach long rails with glue and screws. 10 Attach the four cross rails, spaced evenly between the long rails. 11 Rout a decorative edge to three sides of your desktop (the fourth edge would be against the wall). 12 Sand the top and paint or stain to suit.
