Cut two 2.2m lengths and two 0.7m lengths of treated pine for frame. Mark and cut ten 700mm lengths of cedar.
Back reclining arm: Cut two pieces of pine at 550mm and one piece at 420mm,and fix the three pieces together with screws to form a U shape. Mark out 10mm bolt holes, 50mm in from the end of the two arms.
Timber ratchet: Cut two 550cm lengths and one 420mm length of treated pine. Fix in a U shape with screws. The ratchet should fit snugly around the outside of the back reclining arm.
Fix together pine frame: Pre-drill two holes into each member and fix together with 60mm screws. (NB: all joins are butt-joints) Allow 200mm at 'foot' end for handles (ie, fix end piece 200mm in from foot end). If desired, cut handles to shape with jigsaw.
Fix together reclining arm: Pre-drill two holes into each member and fix together with 60mm screws.
Fix together ratchet: Drill 19mm holes for the dowel at each end of the ratchet arms. Thread 600mm piece of dowel through holes so that there is an overhang on each side.
Lay each piece inside each other: ie, the arm inside the ratchet; the ratchet inside the frame.
680mm in from the 'head' end of the outside frame, drill a 10mm hole through the frame and through the reclining arm. Fix with two 110mm bolts.
Bolt reclining arm and ratchet together with two 60mm bolts by pre-drilling 10mm holes 30mm in from the opposite end to the dowel.
Mark 3 reclining positions on the timber frame — mark positions to suit yourself.
Using a router, create grooves in the frame for the dowel to drop into inclined position.
Pre-drill cedar slats and place in position down the length of the frame, leaving a slightly larger gap where the fold of the reclining back rest is.
Starting at the fold of the reclining back rest and working your way to each end, screw cedar pieces in place with 35mm galvanised screws.
Using a jigsaw, cut four 140mm diameter wheels out of leftover cedar.
Make a pair of wheels by screwing two individual wheels together with 35mm screws.
Drill 19mm holes through the centre of each wheel to fit dowel. Thread wheels onto each end of 700mm piece of dowel and fix with glue.
Fix wheel axle about 130mm in from the 'head' end with 19mm pipe clamps.
Using leftover treated pine, cut two 140mm lengths and screw to the inside corner of the frame at the 'foot' end.
