We show you how to transform a pile of old books into a bedside table.
Find enough books to stack to your desired table height. In this example the book table will be about 600mm high, to use as a bedside table.
Cover all the books in brown paper. There is no need to use glue or sticky tape, just fold in the flaps and close the book.
Decorate the spine of every third or fourth book by rolling on some burgundy paint, and then use blue paint on the rest of the elected books.
When the paint has dried, use the gold paint and a fine paintbrush (or gold pen) to add stripes and detailing, like the embossing on old fashioned leather book bindings. Allow to dry.
Place the decorated books in a pile with the plain covered books. Place the spines in the same direction.
Working from largest to smallest, bind the books together like a parcel, using raffia or string. Make the knots at the side or back of the stack where they won't be easily seen. Continue wrapping each group of books individually apart from the smallest group.
When you get to the final group of books, use Bumpons to hold a piece of glass (cut to fit the top book) onto the cover. Bumpons are self adhesive stickers that are also available through glaziers. When you have the glass cut to size ask that the edges be arrised for safety. Wrap this stack in the same way as you wrapped the others, but tie the raffia under the top cover.
Simply re-stack the piles of books to create your bedside table.
