Perpetual Calendar
Make an old fashioned calendar that will definitely last more than one season

Here is a great viewer suggestion sent in by Mrs Joyce Schofield from Miranda, NSW. Apparently, a perpetual calendar used to be a common sight in the past-especially in England. Of course, now they've been replaced with the glossy paper versions but the modern type is nothing like the calendar of old! Like a lot of things made in the "old days", this perpetual calendar will last much longer . we shall make it from wood!

1
Using the jigsaw, cut the 8mm MDF to 350mm x 600mm. Also cut a curved shape into the top of the board for decoration, using the jigsaw, getting rid of the top "square" edges. Next give all the sides a good sand to remove any sharp edges.
Now using the mitre box, cut 50 pieces of the 50mm x 13mm meranti. (After DAR, the meranti ends up being 40mm x 8mm). So cut each piece at 40mm so the pieces are even squares. Then sand the edges.

2
Using the mitre box again, cut 6 pieces of the 50mm x 13mm meranti to 130mm lengths. (These will become the months of the calendar).
Cut 2 pieces of 50mm x 13mm meranti at 42mm long. These will be used as spacers.

3
Cut 5 x 300mm lengths of meranti 12mm x 12mm. Cut 5 x 300mm lengths of the radiata pine and also cut 2 x 300mm lengths of the rebated picture framing rod.

4
Now it's time to start the assembly. Take the 300mm x 18mm x 18mm piece of radiata pine ('D' mould cross-section shape) and place it directly on top of the 300mm x 12mm x 12mm meranti so that it sits in the centre and flush with the ends. Glue and nail to secure together. (Only nail far enough through to secure the meranti-3 nails per strip). Repeat the process for the next five pieces. These strips hold the 'days' in place on the finished calendar.

5
Measure and mark 15mm up from the bottom of the board. Take one of the picture framing rods, glue and nail it above the line, and ensure the rebate of the rod is facing up.
Using the 42mm pieces as spacers, place one at each end inside the rebate of the picture rod that's been attached.

6
Take one of the pieces from step 4 and place it on the board so the side butts up against the spacers. Then glue and nail into place. Next, remove the spacers, put them on the opposite side (or top side) of the rail and repeat the process. Do this with all the picture frame rods making sure the space continues up the board at 42mm intervals.

7
Take the 6 pieces of meranti 50mm x 13mm x 130mm (the "months"), drill a 4mm hole 20mm in from the side and 10mm down from the top. Repeat on the other side so each piece has two holes. The name of each month is painted on each side of these pieces.
Place one of the 130mm meranti pieces at the top of the board. Mark the position of the holes. Then pre-drill a 2mm pilot hole, and screw in the square hooks. These hooks hold the 'months' in position.

8
Stencil and paint as desired. For this example we add a splash of colour using a landscape scene together with some friendly ducks!
