1
Some support posts and edging joists are put in first. This gives a level to set out a string line for the edge of the deck. The deck is made from treated pine and it is best to have it a little off the ground to allow it to dry out a bit. Stirrups set in concrete make this possible.

2
In order to make the levelling easier, reverse the process, dropping the stirrups from the wood into holes in the ground. Then all you have to do is pour the concrete into these holes and wait for it to set. Your stirrups will be consistently level, no matter how rough the ground. Rapid concrete is great for this as it doesn't take long to harden.

3
Next, the bearers go down. When you are fitting the joists, it is easier to pin them with a nail first, then pre-drill and screw them in place.

4
The joists are at 45-degree angles, with the top and bottom levels running in different directions to help highlight the step in the deck. They will form a sort of chevron pattern when laid.
Hint: Hire a dropsaw or compound mitre saw, for ease and speed. As a safety tip, always use a mask and eye protection when cutting timber.

5
To put the decking down, start in a corner. Pre-drill and screw the short bits to avoid splitting the pine. The longer lengths can be nailed. It is a good idea to hire a nail gun. A few pieces of decking have been added to make a riser for the steps.

6
The jagged end pieces are then cut off to leave a smooth finish. Run a string line as a guide to keep a straight edge, then screw a piece of timber along the mark and use it as a cutting guide.
