How tidy is your desk? Do you find yourself searching endlessly for things under piles of paper, pens, bills and letters? Here at Our House we've found a way to help keep your desk looking spick and span.

STEP BY STEP
1 Cut all timber to length (as per cutting list — see diagram)
2 Construct a 'dry run' of the unit lying on its back. This way you can clearly and accurately mark where everything fits together, particularly the drawers (see diagram).
3 Start gluing, using the PVA, and nailing the unit together. Start with the internal construction (numbered 1 to 6 on the diagram). This completely assembles the unit, but not the drawers. A good tip to remember when nailing the first couple of sections together, is to have the nails partially tapped in so your hand is free to secure the pieces. This will give the unit a straight and flush finish. Punch the nails in as you go with a nail punch.
4 The two backing pieces of the unit cover each side, on the back of the drawer sections. Glue and nail together.
5 The drawer front has been originally cut too big, to allow for the drilling of the finger pull and excess trimming. Using a 1 3/8 Spade Bit (you can use any size), drill a hole just down from the top of the drawer front, in the middle.
6 To form the half finger pull, simply saw through the middle of the hole, cutting off the excess timber.
7 To construct the drawers (see diagram), use the Mitre Mate glue (this has a very fast drying time, so be careful of your fingers!). There are no nails needed, as this glue is very strong.

FINISH
The finish is up to you; paint, stain etc. We chose a simple clear estapol and all it needs it a couple of coats. After the first coat, allow to dry and then fill the nail holes with putty. Sand and give the unit a second coat. This will give you a neater finish.
