Whether you're redecorating or moving house, this knock-down shelf is perfect. It has no permanent joinery holding the shelves to the end frames so it is easy to dismantle. Best of all, it can be reassembled in seconds in its new location. With a diagonal brace to keep it steady, you're ready to stack your favourite books or anything else for storage and display.

Cut two 400mm x 1200mm strips of ply to be the sides of the shelving unit. Starting 150mm from the base, mark a 300mm x 170mm rectangle on the ply, centreing it widthways. Leave a 50mm gap, then mark a second 300 x 170mm rectangle; repeat until you've marked five in total. You should have another 150mm border at the end of your ply. Cut out rectangles with a jigsaw. Drill a guide hole in a couple of the corners of the cut outs first, to start you off with the jigsaw.
After cutting out all the sections, smooth off the edges with a sander or sandpaper.
Cut the shelves 298mm x 1200mm. These will fit neatly between cut outs in the side pieces. As shown on the plan, attach two ply strips (known as locators) 50mm x 15mm at each end of the underside of the shelves. These will keep the shelves in place. They can be square, but we cut ours at a 45° angle to dress them up.
When gluing and nailing the locators in place, fix one first, then put a piece of ply shelf thickness in place to get the right spacing between the two locators.
The brace at the back of the unit will be approximately 1500mm. The brace sits diagonally across the back and is screwed into the sides. Use two screws at each end.
Finish the shelf with a stained varnish.
