Single to Day Bed

Buying new furniture can be expensive. We show you how to convert an old single bed (pine) into a sofa or day bed.

1
Start by measuring the length, height and sides of your bed. Cut four pieces of MDF to size: one panel to sit across the back of the bed, two side panels and one front panel. When working out your measurements, make sure that you allow enough MDF so it ends up higher than the level of the mattress. Some suppliers may cut it to size for you.

2
Draw a decorative pattern onto the top of one side at each end. We used a star design (see diagram). Cut out using a jigsaw. Wear a filter mask and safety goggles for protection.

3
Saw off the bed head from the rest of the bed and attach the four MDF panels using glue and screws. When fixed in place, sand the edges with fine sandpaper.

4
Next, add a touch of colour. Apply a coat of white acrylic undercoat to the bed and allow to dry. Then apply a coat of ultramarine blue as a top coat. Once this is touch-dry, wipe over using a scourer soaked in methylated spirits: this takes off areas of the blue to reveal the white underneath to give a "distressed" appearance. Rub a little harder where you want the white to show through more.

5
Replace the mattress and add a new cover or blanket, together with a few scatter cushions, to finish off your day bed.
